David Willetts Takes Over as UK Regulatory Innovation Chair

David Willetts has taken over as chair of the United Kingdom’s Regulatory Innovation Office, overseeing efforts to accelerate the national government’s adoption of unmanned systems, artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies.

“The Regulatory Innovation Office has an exciting opportunity to shape regulatory approaches that empower new technologies,” he said.

In his new role, Willetts will lead a team to ensure the country maximizes the benefits offered by new, innovative technologies. He brings over decades of experience in science policy, regulation and leadership, including serving as minister for universities and science from 2010 to 2014. Willetts also served on several science-related organizations’ boards, including the UK Research and Innovation and UK Space Agency.

Among the first tasks under his leadership is using drones to cut the delivery time of blood from one healthcare facility to another. RIO collaborated with startup Apian on this effort.

Science and Technology Secretary Peter Kyle emphasized the importance of Willetts’ experience and skills as the first RIO chair. “The Regulatory Innovation Office will be a central thread running through this government’s mission to improve lives, create jobs and drive the economic growth across the country that is central to our Plan for Change,” he added.
