IQT Invests on Cerabyte’s Ceramic Data Storage Development

In-Q-Tel, a nonprofit investor focused on advancing U.S. national security, has extended financial support to the development of Cerabyte’s ceramic data storage technology to meet the data storage needs of government and military customers.

Greg Shipley, managing director at IQT Munich, said the innovative Cerabyte technology shows potential for extended lifespan and reliability in data storage, while also cutting associated costs and complexity. “This strategic partnership aligns with our mission to deliver advanced technologies that meet the needs of the national security community,” he added.

The investment comes as governments and businesses increasingly seek immutable, sustainable, long-term data storage that matches their needs. A report by the National Academies made on behalf of the U.S. Office of the Director of National Intelligence disclosed that the Intelligence Community will significantly benefit from innovative solutions, such as ceramic data storage and silica optical data storage, to fulfill its data storage requirements.

According to Christian Pflaum, co-founder and CEO of Cerabyte, more permanent, immutable records stored in trusted solutions are most needed amid the increasing adoption of artificial intelligence and the growing consumption of digital information.

Cerabyte’s ceramic data storage technology uses zero power to retain data while rapidly delivering needed information. It features laser-matrix writing and high-speed microscope reading technology, enabling the storage of a significant amount of cold data for “virtually unlimited time.”

The company unveiled a prototype of the ceramic data storage solution in July 2024.
