Earth imaging firm Planet Labs has secured a contract from the European Space Agency to deliver Earth observation data to support Greece’s development of a national satellite program. Made on behalf of the Hellenic Ministry of Digital Governance, the transaction will be funded by Recovery and Resilience Fund Greece 2.0.
Dimitris Bliziotis, Earth observation officer at the Hellenic Space Center, said the collaboration will ensure his team will seamlessly integrate Planet Labs’ data into the downstream projects of the Greek National SmallSat Program.
The Hellenic satellite initiative, expected to have 15 Earth observation satellites by 2026, will support efforts securing Greece’s national resources and contribute to reducing the impact of climate change.
“Access to Planet’s satellite data will provide valuable data and insights for the development and validation of our national downstream services,” said Konstantinos Karantzalos, Telecommunications & Post secretary general at the Ministry of Digital Governance. “This will accelerate innovation and will ensure the effective integration with data from our national space assets.”
The contract continues Planet Labs’s long history of supplying nations with Earth imaging services. In October 2024, Brazil, among its customers, renewed a deal to ensure continued delivery of Earth observation capabilities to protect its national rainforests.
