Canadian Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry Francois-Phillipe Champagne has announced the formation of the Safe and Secure Artificial Intelligence Advisory Group to provide the national government with guidance on the risks associated with AI and effective strategies to mitigate them.
The group, comprising 10 experts in engineering, research strategy and computer science, is expected to collaborate closely with the Canadian Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute to establish research priorities and support initiatives aimed at effective regulation and governance of AI. Yoshua Bengio of the University of Montreal, considered a world leader in deep learning and AI, chairs the advisory body.
“Artificial intelligence is one of the most transformative technologies of our time, and there is no doubt that it is here to stay,” Champagne said. “As AI technology continues to evolve, our government is committed to making sure that Canadians can benefit from it safely and that companies are developing it responsibly.”
The minister announced several other efforts to ensure responsible AI development and deployment, including a list of new member companies on the Advisory Council on Artificial Intelligence and the release of a managers’ guide to support the government’s “Voluntary Code of Conduct on the Responsible Development and Management of Advanced Generative AI Systems.”
Ottawa is partnering with other organizations to maximize the benefits offered by AI in various applications. In a collaborative research and development effort forged last November, Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom sought to reduce duplication of efforts amid initiatives aimed at fast-tracking AI development.
