US Approves Potential $304M Radar Sale to Egypt

The U.S. Department of State has approved a possible $304 million foreign military sale to Egypt for AN/TPS-78 long-range radar systems and related logistics support.

Egypt requested AN/TPS-78 radar turnkey systems, KIV-78 cryptographic devices, GPS units with selective availability anti-spoofing modules, spare parts, software, training, engineering and technical support. Northrop Grumman will serve as the primary contractor for the potential deal.

The AN/TPS-78 advanced air surveillance radar has a tracking subsystem to detect and monitor slow-moving air and maritime targets. It has a maximum range of 444 kilometers and operates in the S band frequency, offering both 10-second and 5-second scan rates. According to Northrop Grumman, the 3D radar supports ground control interception and long-range air surveillance, including tactical ballistic missile tracking.

The Defense Security Cooperation Agency said the proposed Foreign Military Sales deal aligns with U.S. foreign policy and national security interests by strengthening Egypt’s defense capabilities. The sensor will be integrated with Cairo’s existing radar network, enhancing the country’s ability to detect aerial threats.

Separately, the State Department approved another $625 million sale to modernize Egypt’s fast missile craft fleet. The FMS order includes four COMBATSS-21 combat management systems, air and surface surveillance radars, electronic warfare systems, fire control radars, and related equipment. Lockheed Martin and L3Harris Technologies will be the principal contractors for this possible sale.
