British multinational Serco has secured a contract to continue providing air navigation services to the United Arab Emirates Department of Civil Aviation in Sharjah.
The agreement focuses on optimizing Sharjah International Airport’s aeronautical information management and air traffic services.
Serco’s partnership with the UAE dates back to 1947 when the company was first awarded the responsibility of ensuring optimal air traffic operations at the airport.
Phil Malem, CEO of Serco Middle East, expressed enthusiasm for the ongoing collaboration, stating, “Our shared focus on innovation and training will ensure that both the airport and its workforce remain at the forefront of the region’s aviation sector. We are proud to be part of Sharjah International Airport’s journey of growth and to contribute towards impacting a better future for the UAE.”
The contract includes implementing training programs for the airport’s workforce. Serco and the UAE are already working on several initiatives to upskill airport professionals. Since the training initiative began, 48 percent of the workforce at Sharjah International Airport has been composed of Emiratis.
Sheikh Khalid bin Essam Al Qasimi, chairman of the Department of Civil Aviation in Sharjah, emphasized that the contract renewal not only underscores the UAE’s continued trust in Serco’s expertise but also highlights its commitment to “enhance opportunities for nationals to play a greater role in air traffic services.”
