Defense company Saab launched the HMS Halland submarine for the Swedish Navy on Friday after completing an extensive mid-life upgrade.
The submarine is the third and final vessel of the Gotland class to undergo a modernization project. The upgrade includes the installation of over 20 advanced technologies, such as enhanced sensors and updated command systems, many of which will also be used in the Swedish Navy’s upcoming Blekinge-class submarines. The work was carried out at Saab’s facility in Karlskrona, Sweden.
According to Saab, the enhancements will enable the HMS Halland to operate effectively alongside its sister submarines, the HMS Gotland and HMS Uppland.
Mats Wicksell, Saab senior vice president and head of Business Area Kockums, emphasized that the work on the Halland showcases the company’s ability to provide advanced technologies that meet the needs of naval forces.
“Securing critical underwater infrastructure and sea lanes is more important than ever,” the executive said. “With HMS Halland, the Swedish Navy, and by extension NATO, is given additional muscle to defend and monitor the Baltic Sea.”
Saab continues to be a vital partner in supplying essential technology for the Swedish armed forces. In 2023, the company began collaborating with the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration to explore future underwater capabilities, aiming to equip the nation’s warfighters with advanced skills and technology.
