Finnish Defence Forces Taps Safran for Advanced Navigation Systems

The Finnish Defence Forces has chosen Safran Electronics & Defense to provide Geonyx inertial navigation systems for its artillery systems. The contract, which runs from 2024 to 2031, aims to enhance Finland’s operational readiness and precision.

Geonyx INS, powered by Safran’s proprietary HRG Crystal technology, delivers accurate navigation and targeting capabilities. It is designed to endure high shock levels, making it suitable for demanding artillery applications, including howitzers, rocket launchers, mortars and light guns, mobile radars and forward observer systems. An optional NavWar upgrade improves Geonyx’s resilience against jamming and spoofing, automatically disabling GPS input when potential threats are detected.

Safran expects this agreement to provide the Finnish military with dependable navigation solutions in complex and dynamic environments, ensuring high precision for its artillery systems even in areas where global navigation satellite systems are unavailable.

The contract follows Safran’s recent defense agreements, including one with Germany’s Bundeswehr for advanced infrared multifunction binoculars. Earlier this month, Safran partnered with India’s Bharat Electronics to manufacture the HAMMER precision-guided air-to-ground weapon in India.
