EPI, an EDGE business focused on advanced precision engineering solutions, has signed a letter of intent with Lockheed Martin to explore opportunities in several defense domains that would drive the United Arab Emirates industrial growth, national defense capabilities and self-sufficiency. The deal was formalized with government and business leaders in attendance, including Khaled Al Zaabi, president of platforms and systems at EDGE.
EPI CEO Michael Deshaies explained how working with Lockheed Martin will empower the UAE economy.
“Part of our core strategy at EPI is to explore mutually beneficial partnerships to drive the diversification of our operations and join forces with key players in aerospace and defense, in line with our commitment to excellence and innovation,” the chief executive said.
According to John S. Clark, vice president of business development at Lockheed Martin’s Missiles and Fire Control division, the partnership also aligns with his company’s mission to deliver cutting-edge solutions while expanding its presence in the region.
The collaboration builds on the UAE’s increasing focus on building its defense capabilities, leading to significant spending on military technologies and collaborations with various contractors. In October, the U.S. Department of State approved the Mideast nation’s request to acquire munitions for the Lockheed Martin-built Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System and Army Tactical Missile System.
Abu Dhabi is also on track to develop its space capabilities. The country’s Earth Observation Program recently tapped a Space42-ICEYE joint venture to manufacture synthetic aperture radar satellites locally.
