Uruguay has ordered five A-29 Super Tucano aircraft from Brazilian manufacturer Embraer. The order is part of a contract signed in August 2024, which initially included the delivery of one aircraft with the option to acquire more units in the future.
The Uruguayan Air Force made this original order to enhance its operational capabilities by expanding its existing fleet. Bosco da Costa Jr., president and CEO of Embraer Defense & Security, said the A-29 is a unique piece of military technology that enables Uruguay the capability to guard its borders and contribute to combat readiness.
The Super Tucano is designed to be versatile and capable of performing various missions, including air patrol, close air support, and operational and advanced training. It features a rugged platform and improved cockpit visibility to meet the increasingly complex requirements of air operations. Additionally, the aircraft is known for its high maneuverability and control.
With this latest order, Uruguay joins the ranks of 20 nations that rely on the A-29 Super Tucano for various air operations.
“The acquisition of the A-29 Super Tucano … is part of the commitment assumed by the government to renew the material and equipment of our armed forces to fulfill their assigned missions,” said Armando Castaingdebat, Uruguay’s national defense minister.
