The United States has approved a potential sale of MK 54 MOD 0 lightweight torpedoes to Saudi Arabia. The deal, worth an estimated $78.5 million, includes 20 torpedoes, spare parts, and engineering, training and logistical support.
According to the Defense Security Cooperation Agency, the sale aims to upgrade Saudi Arabia’s anti-submarine warfare capabilities and enhance its security. It is also expected to contribute to the Gulf region’s regional stability and economic progress. The principal contractor for the sale is RTX Integrated Defense Systems.
This potential sale follows other recent U.S. approvals for arms sales to the Mideast kingdom, including TOW 2A and 2B anti-tank missiles, AIM-9X Block II Sidewinder missiles and other types of ammunition.
Saudi Arabia’s other defense-related procurement is an order with Airbus for four A330 Multi Role Tanker Transport aircraft for the Royal Saudi Air Force. Also, Washington has greenlit a $250 million sale of blanket order training to the Mideast nation, focused on improving the capabilities of the Royal Saudi Naval Forces and supporting U.S. foreign policy objectives in the region.
