ASI, the Italian Space Agency, has selected Thales Alenia Space to lead its Surface Biology and Geology – Thermal Infrared Earth observation mission with NASA. The initiative aims to integrate advanced technologies to obtain radiometric and multispectral measurements of emissions from terrestrial and aquatic sources, providing a clearer understanding of the planet’s condition.

Integrating Advanced Tech

Thales Alenia Space, a joint venture between Thales and Leonardo, will focus on successfully integrating the SBG-TIR satellite. This will involve customizing its PRIMA-S platform to include a spectrometer designed for thermal IR measurements and the VIREO instrument developed by Leonardo.

“This contract …  confirms the flexible concept of the PRIMA-S platform with respect to different types of payloads as well as its use for different classes of low and middle Earth orbits missions,” said Giampiero Di Paolo, deputy CEO and senior vice president for observation, exploration and navigation at Thales Alenia Space.

He also highlighted the importance of the contract for Italy in enhancing its Earth observation capabilities.

Working With US Partners

ASI is responsible for managing the entire system, payload integration and launch operations of the SBG-TIR mission in collaboration with NASA and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

ASI President Teodoro Valente said working with U.S. partners demonstrates the agency’s commitment to developing solutions for climate change and other global environmental issues.

“By integrating the capabilities of our COSMO-SkyMed and PRISMA satellites with new thermal infrared observations, we will be able to provide a clearer and more detailed picture of the state of our planet, contributing to building a better future for generations to come,” he added.
