Sweden Demonstrates Swarm Drones, Aims to Improve Intelligence, Surveillance Capabilities

Sweden has showcased the capabilities of its swarming unmanned aerial vehicle fleet, enhancing its armed forces’ intelligence and surveillance capabilities.

A video shared with Defense News demonstrated the drones’ abilities, including high-resolution imagery and artificial intelligence-powered analysis. These features provide officials on the ground with immediate access to actionable insights, accelerating the decision-making process.

Aerospace company Saab is collaborating with the armed forces, the Swedish Defense Material Administration and the Swedish Defense Research Agency to develop these swarming solutions.

“The individual UAVs in the swarm are equipped with different capabilities, such as varying sensors, payload and communication capacities. The swarms are controlled by a single operator who can assign … tasks to one or more swarms, for instance via a mobile phone,” a Saab spokesperson said.

While Saab does not directly supply drones, the company has partnered with several firms to develop software for the UAVs’ command and control systems.

In October, Jonson announced that Sweden allocated a larger defense budget in response to growing threats from Russia. Among the recent defense investments made by Stockholm is an initiative to improve coastal border security. In early January, Sweden contracted Saab to support upgrade initiatives for the nation’s coastal anti-ship missile capabilities under a $72.5 million agreement.
