Germany’s Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support has contracted Safran Electronics & Defense Germany for advanced infrared multifunction binoculars.
Safran did not disclose the exact product it will supply to the defense acquisition office but said the new binoculars will enhance the German infantry’s operational capabilities, providing day and night observation and target acquisition in all weather conditions and even GPS-denied environments.
The company’s Murr facility in Baden-Württemberg will serve as the primary point of contact for the German Armed Forces and provide support and maintenance for the products.
According to the Safran website, among its multifunction IR binoculars is the JIM COMPACT, a long-range binocular system used by 18 NATO countries, offering 24/7 target observation and identification, an intuitive human-machine interface and a modular ecosystem.
The latest contract follows Safran’s selection to equip the German federal police’s new Airbus H225 helicopter fleet with Makila 2A engines. In July, Safran Helicopter Engines also signed a significant support-by-the-hour contract with Airbus Helicopters for the maintenance, repair and overhaul of the Arriel 2E engines powering the Bundeswehr’s new H145M helicopters.
