Saab Secures $73M Deal to Upgrade Sweden’s Coastal Defenses

The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration has awarded Saab a contract worth $72.5 million to modernize Sweden’s coastal anti-ship missile capabilities. The agreement involves upgrading Stockholm’s existing RBS15 Mk2 units to the newer Saab truck-mounted RBS15 Mk3 missile system, with deliveries expected to begin in 2026.

The RBS15 Mk3, developed in partnership with German firm Diehl Defence, boasts a range of over 200 kilometers and is primarily designed for targeting naval vessels. As the latest version in Saab’s RBS15 anti-ship missile family, it features advanced tracking, targeting technology and electronic protection measures suited for complex littoral environments. The RBS15 is currently in use by seven nations, including Sweden, Germany and Croatia.

Görgen Johansson, head of Saab Dynamics, emphasized the missile system’s capabilities, highlighting its larger warhead and extended range. “RBS15 is specifically developed for the complex environment and harsh weather conditions of the Baltic Sea,” he said.

This contract is part of a broader series of defense system contracts awarded to Saab. Earlier this December, the company secured a $48 million contract from BAE Systems to supply Giraffe 4A radar systems to the U.S. Air Forces in Europe. Additionally, in October, Lithuania awarded Saab a $116 million contract for a mobile short-range air defense system.
