OCCAR Grants India Observer Status in Eurodrone Development Program

The Organisation for Joint Armament Cooperation has granted the government of India observer state status in its European Medium Altitude Long Endurance Remotely Piloted Aircraft System, or MALE RPAS, program.

Joachim Sucker, the director of executive administration at OCCAR, delivered the letter of approval to Ajit Gupte, the ambassador of India to Germany, during a ceremony held at the Indian embassy in Berlin.

India officially requested observer state status in August 2024. The designation will provide New Delhi with insight into the technology’s development.

According to OCCAR’s press release, being an observer state allows India to explore collaboration opportunities in developing unmanned systems and strengthening its partnerships with international allies.

The project, known as the Eurodrone, aims to create a MALE RPAS for Europe, designed to conduct safe and reliable flights for various missions, including intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition and reconnaissance.

Airbus Defence and Space, Leonardo, and Dassault Aviation are the key developers of the Eurodrone. The technology is expected to be delivered to Germany in 2027 and to France in 2028.
