The New Zealand government has allocated funding to enhance critical communication networks for Maritime New Zealand and Coastguard New Zealand. Transport Minister Simeon Brown and Associate Transport Minister Matt Doocey announced the funding, emphasizing its importance in improving search and rescue operations and overall maritime safety.
Brown said the funding will upgrade the National Maritime Distress and Safety Communications Service, which Maritime New Zealand relies on, and replace Coastguard New Zealand’s outdated VHF radio network. The NMDSCS’ modernization will align it with international standards and enhance its capacity to manage high traffic volumes. The upgraded VHF network will offer a more reliable lifeline for distressed vessels, benefiting the recreational and commercial maritime sectors.
“Modernizing the NMDSCS will saves lives … Without this funding, there is a real risk to safety on the water as the existing system nears the end of its operational life,” Brown said.
Doocey underscored the significance of these upgrades, especially during peak seasons, to ensure an effective search and rescue response. “Maritime New Zealand and Coastguard New Zealand do an incredible job saving lives, and our government is committed to strengthening their ability to respond to emergencies swiftly and effectively,” he said.
This investment builds on previous government support for maritime safety. In December, funding was approved to increase staffing at Maritime New Zealand’s Rescue Coordination Centre, adding a fifth switch and raising the number of full-time staff from 16 to 20. Brown said the allocation will ensure the center can operate 24/7, allowing for faster response times to domestic and international emergencies.
Additionally, the government approved $23.1 million for four frontline volunteer service organizations: Surf Life Saving New Zealand, Coastguard New Zealand, New Zealand Land Search and Rescue, and Amateur Radio Emergency Communications. This funding will help replace storm-damaged assets and provide necessary training and equipment to boost New Zealand’s emergency response capabilities.
