China Looks to Broaden Global Presence With New Amphibious Assault Ship

China unveiled its latest amphibious assault ship, the Sichuan, on Friday, showcasing technologies that enhance the capabilities of its naval forces.

The new 40,000-ton vessel, classified as a 076 type, is the largest of its kind for the Chinese Navy and is designed to operate in multiple locations worldwide. It features advanced military equipment, including an electromagnetic catapult that lets pilots launch fighter jets off the ship’s deck. Additionally, it incorporates an “arrestor technology” that allows fighter aircraft to land safely on the deck.

The Sichuan is a significant part of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army Navy’s fleet modernization initiative, which aims to extend naval operations far from mainland China. An Associated Press report highlighted that this effort also includes the development of a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, enabling naval forces to conduct missions without needing to return to base for refueling.

In addition to bolstering its naval prowess, Beijing is investing in its other military branches to maintain a competitive edge. In April, the PLA announced the formation of three new units focused on cyber operations, information warfare and space operations, which will replace the existing Strategic Support Force.
