Japan Ministry of Defense Taps Smiths Detection for Chemical Detectors

Japan has awarded Smiths Detection, a provider of screening security technology, a contract to supply LCD 4 personal chemical detectors for the Ministry of Defense.

The contract covers 462 units of the lightweight chemical detector, which will be deployed by the Ground Self-Defense Force. The deliveries are scheduled in stages through January 2026, with distribution to be handled by S.T. Japan.

The compact and wearable LCD 4 is an advanced warning device that detects gas and vapor threats at or below immediate danger to life and health levels by determining the agent or type, class, concentration and dosage of chemical exposure. According to Smiths Detection, the MOD selected the detectors for their exceptional performance, flexibility and seamless integration into its system.

Sarah Robinson, portfolio director at Smiths Detection, said the company will customize the devices to meet the MOD’s requirements, including a Japanese-language option. An XID add-on could also expand the devices’ detection capabilities to include solids, liquids, narcotics, explosives and low-volatility chemical traces.

Smiths Detection previously supplied Japan’s Kansai International Airport and Fukuoka International Airport with X-ray scanners and smart tray return systems.
