Israel Taps Elbit Systems for F-16I Self-Protection Solution

Elbit Systems has received a contract valued at up to $80 million from Israel’s Ministry of Defence to integrate an advanced Airborne Self-Protection Suite on the Israeli Air Force’s F-16I fleet.

The contract will see the Israeli defense company install an electronic warfare technology with an advanced electro-optical passive missile warning and launch detection system.

Oren Sabag, general manager of intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition and reconnaissance and electronic warfare at Elbit Systems, said armed forces must safeguard their aerial platforms amid the growing complexity of the modern battlespace.

“Elbit Systems has cemented its position as a global leader in airborne platform protection, delivering an extensive portfolio of advanced solutions installed onboard various aerial platforms,” the Elbit executive said.

The defense contractor secured a similar order in December when it partnered with Lufthansa Technik to install the J-MUSIC directed infrared countermeasure, or DIRCM, self-protection system on Germany’s Airbus A350 aircraft.

The company is a frequent collaborator of the Israel Defense Force. Elbit and Rafael Advanced Defense System played a key role in accelerating the development of Iron Beam, a laser air defense system under the nation’s three-layered defense mechanism called the Iron Dome. The Elbit team also received a contract in December to deliver a wide range of advanced communication systems, including software-defined radio and satellite communication systems.
