Blue Abyss, NASA’s Glenn Research Center Collaborate on Space Training, Research

U.K. space and subsea training and research firm Blue Abyss has formed a Space Act agreement with NASA’s Glenn Research Center to enhance commercial space training, research and infrastructure development. The collaboration will focus on developing next-generation capabilities for human spaceflight training and simulations that mimic extreme environments.

NASA will provide its extensive expertise in space exploration to guide the project’s development. Specific efforts include formulating training methods and studying the effects of extreme gravity on humans, robotics and various scientific disciplines. Moreover, the collaboration will entail setting up advanced facilities, including underwater research sites and augmented reality tools.

Blue Abyss will also conduct a market study to define infrastructure needs for the next decade. The findings will help NASA understand how commercial facilities can influence future missions.

Blue Abyss CEO John Vickers described the agreement as a significant milestone, saying, “It helps develop the international space sector, supporting industry growth, training and infrastructure development that will support international clients and foster innovation.”

The company has confirmed progress on a proposed facility in Cleveland near the Glenn Research Center. The U.S. facility is supported by $2.3 million in secured predevelopment funding, with plans for further expansion. Blue Abyss said it has also secured match funding for a planned facility in Cornwall, U.K.

NASA’s recent initiatives include focusing on the peaceful exploration of the moon and outer space under the Artemis Accords framework, which recently welcomed Finland, Liechtenstein, Thailand, Austria, and Panama as new signatories.
