F-35A Fleet Completion Leads Australian 2024 Military Buildup

The Royal Australian Air Force has received nine new F-35A Lightning II fighter aircraft, increasing its total fleet to 72. The milestone highlights the rapid capability buildup of the Australian Defense Force in 2024, the Australian Ministry of Defence said. The newly acquired aircraft will complement the RAAF’s existing fleet of EA-18G Growler and F/A-18F Super Hornets, forming the backbone of Australia’s air defense and strike capabilities.

The F-35A is designed for multirole operations, allowing for various missions, including air-to-air and air-to-surface engagements, while maximizing lethality and survivability. The aircraft’s advanced features include stealth technology and electronic attack and defense modes.

At the RAAF Base Williamtown in New South Wales, where the final nine F-35As were delivered, BAE Systems Australia is working with the Australian government to establish a maintenance facility by 2026 to support the F-35 fleet’s sustainment needs. BAE anticipates hiring approximately 750 employees to assist with F-35 sustainment efforts in Australia.

According to Pat Conroy, minister for defense industry and capability delivery, the government’s initiatives to provide necessary capabilities for the ADF also strengthen Australia’s defense industry, create job opportunities and align with its goal of achieving “a future made in Australia.”

In addition to expanding the F-35A fleet, the ADF’s capability-building programs for 2024 included the commencement of construction on a $200 million Boeing 737 maintenance facility at RAAF Edinburgh, as well as the acquisition of seven new UH-60M Black Hawk helicopters for the Australian Army.

To enhance the Royal Australian Navy’s capabilities, the service has received the first prototype of the Ghost Shark undersea drone and demonstrated new missile capabilities, including the first-ever firing of the Tomahawk guided missile. Furthermore, construction for the first Hunter-class frigate also began in 2024.
