BWXT Canada has signed a memorandum of understanding with Westinghouse Electric to support new nuclear reactor projects locally and internationally.
The agreement tasks the BWXT Technologies subsidiary with manufacturing critical components for AP1000 and AP300 reactors, such as steam generators, reactor vessels and heat exchangers.
John MacQuarrie, president of BWXT Commercial Operations, said the collaboration aims to expand clean energy availability worldwide. “In addition to our highly skilled Canadian workforce and decades of experience, we have unmatched manufacturing capabilities that will help bring Westinghouse’s designs to life, supplying the world with the carbon-free energy it needs for decades to come,” the executive said.
The new partnership follows BWX Technologies’ announcement of a $58 million investment to expand its Cambridge nuclear manufacturing facility in Ontario. The project includes a $36.5 million expansion of the plant’s size by 25 percent and $21.9 million for advanced manufacturing equipment, with work scheduled through late 2026.
Dan Lipman, president of Westinghouse Energy Systems, highlighted BWXT’s role in ensuring the timely and cost-effective delivery of AP1000 projects in North America. He also noted the partnership’s potential to boost Canada’s economy through job creation and local trade involvement.
Earlier this year, Westinghouse signed a contract with the Dutch government to evaluate the feasibility of deploying two AP1000 nuclear reactors at the Borssele Nuclear Power Station, the Netherlands’ only operational nuclear plant. The study supports the Dutch government’s nuclear new-build strategy, which targets carbon neutrality by 2050.
