Bundeswehr, MBDA-Saab Joint Venture Team Up for Taurus Missiles Upgrade

The German armed forces have contracted Taurus Systems, a joint venture between MBDA Deutschland and Saab Dynamics, to enhance the Taurus stand-off weapon system.

The agreement includes a comprehensive modernization of Taurus cruise missiles, which will involve maintenance and technological upgrades to meet the evolving requirements of the air-to-surface weapon and extend its operational readiness until at least 2045.

Air Defense Capabilities

The Taurus system is a critical component of both the German Air Force and NATO’s defense capabilities, helping to mitigate risks to pilots and air defense platforms.

In October, a Reuters report indicated that German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius is considering developing and purchasing 600 advanced Taurus Neo cruise missiles, an upgraded version of the existing Taurus. This move comes in response to Ukraine’s ongoing requests for long-range weaponry. According to an anonymous source, the ruling coalition of the German government supports Pistorius’ plan, which is expected to use approximately $2.3 billion.

Missile System Upgrades

Berlin has also been actively enhancing its missile capabilities.

In July, MBDA secured an order to supply Brimstone 3 precision strike missiles for Germany’s Eurofighter combat aircraft. This deal, which includes 3,266 missile units, represents the first Brimstone production line established outside the United Kingdom. Additionally, the same month, Germany awarded RTX’s Raytheon a $1.2 billion contract for additional Patriot air and missile defense systems.
