The United Arab Emirates has secured U.S. Department of State approval to procure munitions for the Lockheed Martin-built Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System and Army Tactical Missile System and related logistics and program support, valued at $1.2 billion.
Under the potential foreign military sale, the UAE government can purchase 259 GMLRS M31A1 Unitary pods each consisting of six missiles and 203 ATACMS M57 unitary missiles. The deal also includes personnel training and training equipment, software development, and technical and logistics support services.
According to Lockheed, the GMLRS Unitary rocket variant integrates a 200-pound unitary warhead that has a range exceeding 70 kilometers and provides precision strikes for point targets. ATACMS M57, meanwhile, can hit long-range point or area-located targets, including air defense, command posts, assembly areas and high-value targets, without the hazard of unexploded submunitions.
The proposed sale will support the UAE’s armed forces modernization effort to improve its capability to defend against current and future threats and enhance its interoperability with U.S. forces, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency said.
