SRI Partners With Japan’s Ministry of Defense to Support New Research Institute

Research and development nonprofit SRI International has partnered with Japan to support the newly established Defense Innovation Science and Technology Institute.

SRI, which has been working with the Japanese industry and government for over 60 years, will aid DISTI in defining and managing projects in critical technology areas identified by the Acquisition, Technology & Logistics Agency within Japan’s Ministry of Defense. Modeled after the United States’ Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, the institute will focus on developing advanced technologies to address Japan’s national security concerns. Cindy Daniell, an industry consultant and former DARPA program manager, will work with SRI to help shape DISTI’s research program and assist in guiding and coaching local program managers.

“Our team aligns perfectly with the mission of the Defense Innovation Science and Technology Institute, and together, we will develop programs that can help enhance global security and benefit the Japanese people,” SRI CEO David Parekh said in a statement.

According to local media, the research institute will be located at Ebisu Garden Place in Shibuya and will hire academic and industry experts in fields such as artificial intelligence and robotics engineering.

In line with Tokyo’s National Defense Strategy, DISTI will also monitor research trends and oversee support programs for the private sector, focusing on dual-use technologies for defense and civilian applications. Kyodo News reported in August that the Japanese government has earmarked $147 million for its establishment.
