Samsung Electronics and KT Corp. have received a contract from the Republic of Korea Navy to deploy a private 5G network in a Korean naval base under the Smart Naval Port initiative. The effort, expected to be deployed by December 2025, will boost the service’s battleship and base operation support capabilities.
According to a deal announced Tuesday, the tech companies will build an infrastucture capable of powering several use cases, including a 3D, high-definition digital replica of the military facility. It will also support intelligent security monitoring of the base and power a one-stop battleship operation management system.
Simon Lee, vice president and head of the B2B and B2G networks business at Samsung Electronics, highlighted the security, reliability and proven record offered by the company’s private 5G solution. “In collaboration with KT, we are excited to deploy Korea’s first private 5G at a naval base,” he said. “This project exemplifies our ongoing commitment to enhance and unlock the potential of 5G to meet every customer’s needs.”
Private 5G networks offer government agencies a solution to meet their communication needs without sacrificing security, according to Ireland-based IT company Druid Software’s Chief Technology Officer Derek Gallagher.
