Planet Labs, Brazil Renew Earth Observation Monitoring Deal to Protect Rainforests

Earth data and insights provider Planet Labs has renewed its contract with the Federal Police of Brazil to continue delivering daily monitoring of the country’s rainforests.

The 12-month contract renewal, granted under the Brasil MAIS Program, will see Planet Labs work with its local partner SCCON Geospatial, providing organizations in the South American nation with continuous monitoring of 8.6 million square kilometers of Brazilian territory and marine coast areas.

According to Planet, the use of satellite imagery has enabled Brazilian police to collect $3 billion from fines, seized goods and frozen assets coming from illegal logging, mining and other activities.

Data from 2023 released by the country’s National Space Research Institute revealed that deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon grew in July, the first such development recorded since March 2023. The illegal activity has destroyed more than 600 square kilometers of the forest.

Planet Labs secured a similar contract from Germany in September, providing the German Space Agency with near-daily imagery and satellite data to support research efforts to understand climate, security and the global economy.
