The U.S. Department of State has agreed to a potential Foreign Military Sales deal of Javelin FGM-148F missiles and related equipment to Bulgaria.
The sale valued at $114 million includes 218 pieces of the portable anti-tank weapon, plus 107 Javelin lightweight command launch units and associated training and support equipment.
According to the Defense Security Cooperation Agency, the proposed sale will enhance the Balkan country’s security as a NATO ally and contribute to political and economic stability in Europe, aligning with U.S. foreign policy and national security goals.
Lockheed Martin and RTX, under their Javelin Joint Venture partnership, will be the prime contractors for the project. According to the Javelin JV team, the F model is a deadlier version of the missile, first rolling into production in May 2020.
The Javelin weapons system is used extensively by the United States and its allies, particularly in Europe. According to an MSN report, the approval of the potential FMS deal comes just days after a meeting of Eastern European nations known as the Bucharest Nine to discuss defense against threats in NATO’s eastern flank.
