Turkey said it now has an artificial intelligence-powered. network-centric air defense system to protect the country from regional threats.
The system, dubbed “Steel Dome,” was developed by defense electronics manufacturer Aselsan, Roketsan, Sage and Mechanical and Chemical Industry Corp. under the coordination of the Defense Industry Agency, or SSB.
According to an SSB announcement, the homegrown air defense system will feature four layers of defense: very short range, short range, medium range and long range, with the capability to address threats using Korkut, Hisar A+, and Kalkan 1 technology.
Turkish defense expert Can Kasapoglu told Breaking Defense that the layered defense system differs significantly from Israel’s Iron Dome. “It is an all-sensors best-shooter type of holistic defensive architecture … not one single weapon system,” he said.
Israel’s Iron Dome, developed by Rafael Advanced Defence Systems, can defend against short-range missiles and rockets.
