New AI Cooperation Agreement Aims to Boost US-Singapore Defense Alliance

The U.S. Department of Defense and the Singapore Ministry of Defence have established a framework for technical collaboration on data analytics and artificial intelligence under a newly released statement of intent.

The SOI — signed on Monday by Radha Iyengar Plumb, DOD’s chief digital and AI officer, and Brig. Gen. Yew Chee Leung, Singapore Ministry of Defence deputy secretary — pinpoints the key areas for collaboration, such as responsible AI development and use. The agreement will enable the discussion and exchange of best AI and data analytics practices between the defense agencies, DOD said in a statement.

The document signing was one of the activities during Singapore Minister for Defence Ng Eng Hen’s visit to the U.S. Ng was a speaker at the Aspen Security Forum scheduled from July 16 to 19 in Colorado.

In a bilateral meeting that the Pentagon hosted for his counterpart, U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin acknowledged the U.S.-Singapore AI collaboration in defense, calling it a “major arrangement” that will strengthen the two countries’ military interoperability.

In a Mindef news release, Ng also affirmed the SOI’s signing, noting the increasing AI influence in securing competitive advantage in the digital battlefield.
