The U.S. Department of Commerce has announced its support for establishing an international network of artificial intelligence safety institutes to enable global cooperation in ensuring that the technology is used responsibly.
Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, who made the announcement at the AI Seoul Summit, noted that such a network will mark a new phase in international coordination on AI safety that builds on the U.S. Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute’s collaborations with similar organizations in the United Kingdom, Japan, Canada and Singapore and the European AI Office.
The AISI plans to gather international AI safety institutes and other stakeholders in the coming months in the San Francisco Bay Area to promote partnerships within the network.
The network’s establishment aligns with a new AISI strategic vision Raimondo introduced during the summit. According to the official, the document provides a clear picture of how the Commerce Department will harness the power of AI responsibly while reducing risks and highlights the importance of working with partner nations through a global scientific network on AI safety.
“Safety fosters innovation, so it is paramount that we get this right and that we do so in concert with our partners around the world to ensure the rules of the road on AI are written by societies that uphold human rights, safety and trust,” Raimondo said.
