The governments of Germany and the United Kingdom have committed to ensure access to secure, safe, affordable and clean energy for citizens of both nations.
On Friday, Claire Coutinho, U.K. secretary of state for energy and net zero, signed an agreement with German Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck to enhance cooperation on shifting to renewable energy sources and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
“The U.K. and Germany agree on the importance of clean, affordable energy and we both recognize its crucial role in growing our economies and guaranteeing national and global energy security,” Coutinho said.
“Today’s agreement will see us extend and deepen our partnership to ensure we continue to lead Europe and the world in making the green transition.”
The U.K. and Germany are among the over 100 signatories of the Paris Agreement, which aims to limit the increase of global temperatures to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
Under the two nation’s energy and climate, Germany and the U.K. will exchange industry knowledge and data on carbon capture, promote regional and global energy security, cooperate on renewable energy projects, and share best practices and lessons learned on heat decarbonization and energy efficiency.
In September, Europe’s two largest economies also signed the hydrogen partnership to accelerate the development of renewable hydrogen technologies for energy use.
