Engineering, planning and consulting services provider Michael Baker International has promoted James Koch, previously the president of federal programs and services, to the positions of executive vice president and chief operating officer. Koch, who joined Michael Baker in 2017, will report to Chief Executive Officer Brian Lutes and oversee the presidents of each of the company’s four verticals. Koch brings to his new roles over four decades of military and engineering firm experience, Michael Baker said.

Earlier in his career, Koch had served in the U.S. Army, where his final assignment was as director of the U.S. Army Engineer School’s Department of Tactics, Leadership & Engineering. He retired from service with the rank of lieutenant colonel. Afterward, he entered the private sector, where, before coming to Michael Baker, he held senior leadership positions, managing projects and programs across the United States and in other countries.

Koch is currently a member of the Army Engineer Association and the Construction Management Association of America and a fellow in the Society of American Military Engineers and the American Society of Civil Engineers.

Koch earned his doctorate degree in engineering management from the Missouri University of Science and Technology.
