A former NASA astronaut, Culbertson oversees the Dulles, Va.-based contractor’s assembly of Cygnus cargo space vehicles for missions to the International Space Station and other lower-Earth orbit destinations.

Space systems segment sales represent close to 27 percent of Orbital ATK’s overall revenue, according to the company’s fiscal year 2015 annual report.

The company shipped Cygnus to NASA in October ahead of the spacecraft’s launch on Dec. 3 to carry scientific experiments and crew supplies to the ISS.

That launch was Orbital ATK’s fourth ISS cargo delivery mission as part of its original Commercial Resupply Services contract with NASA awarded in 2008.

“This launch marks the completion of the critical first step of our go-forward plan for the CRS-1 contract to meet our commitments to NASA,” Culbertson said.

He noted then that the mission carried more than 7,000 pounds of cargo and had at least 50 percent more capacity than previous Cygnus models.

In mid-January, NASA selected Orbital ATK with Sierra Nevada and SpaceX for the “Round 2” Commercial Resupply Services contracts to send cargo to and from the ISS through 2014 and each company will receive at least six flights a piece.

Executive Mosaic congratulates Frank Culbertson and the Orbital ATK team for their selection to receive this award.
