Executive Mosaic is honored to introduce Heidi Shyu, assistant secretary for acquisition, logistics and technology at the U.S. Army, as the newest inductee into the Wash100 — a group of influential leaders in the government contracting arena.

Shy started in the role on an acting basis June 2011 and received confirmation to the full-time position in September 2012.

She serves as the Army’s acquisition and senior procurement executive, senior research and development officer and science adviser to Army Secretary John McHugh.

Her work encompasses acquisition management, life-cycle management and sustainment, oversight for the U.S. chemical weapons elimination program and management of the Army Acquisition Corps and Army Acquisition Workforce.

In August 2014, Shyu described the Army’s plans to use open source and interoperability models for the Man Transportable Robotic System, which will support ground warfare operations.

“[MTRS] will address several shortfalls in our current capability, namely the need for a common chassis that supports multiple payloads, which will reduce sustainment costs, logistics footprint and integration risks,” she said in the report.

Shyu has also noted that the Joint Light Tactical Vehicles acquisition program is a high priority for the Army amid budget uncertainty.

Before her appointment to the Army, Shyu worked on military technology programs in areas such as unmanned and reconnaissance systems, electronic warfare sensors and the Joint Strike Fighter at Raytheon, where she held research and technology leadership roles.
