michael haydenExecutive Mosaic is honored to announce Michael Hayden, principal at the Chertoff Group, as the newest inductee into the Wash 100, the premier group of leaders who create value for the American public and execute strategic vision at the intersection of the public and private sectors.

As the former director of the CIA, former director of the National Security Agency, and first principal deputy director of National Intelligence, the retired four-star U.S. Air Force general understands the significance of who dictates the balance of communication and information.

“The best defense is knowing what your enemies are up to, before they know you know it,” Hayden said when joining the firm. “For today’s CEOs, there is also the challenge of figuring out who and where your enemies are.”

Chertoff Group logoIn his role as principal at Chertoff Group, Hayden focuses on communication and data networks as they apply to technological intelligence and counterintelligence; the structure and strategy of the American intelligence community; and global political and terrorist risk analysis.

Along with Michael Chertoff, the former homeland security secretary and co-founded of the Chertoff Group, Hayden has encouraged Congress to move on cybersecurity legislation and for all stakeholders to be more proactive in the international cyber realm.

“A more nuanced approach is needed,” the pair wrote in a 2013 article for the Hill.

“Congress’s role — and an appropriate one — is oversight. It should oblige the executive branch to develop a strategic plan. Though the planning might start with China, we need to be prepared for the proliferation of cyber espionage and intrusion on a global scale.”

“In short, we need to outgrow our Midlife crisis.”

The duo has also advocated “a system of targeted financial and economic sanctions directed at Chinese companies that materially benefit from stolen American intellectual property.”

“Global security can be formed or threatened by heads of state whose wisdom, folly and obsessions shape global events,” Hayden said.

“But often it is the security practitioners, those rarely in the headlines but whose craft and energy quietly break new ground, who keep us safe or put us in peril.”

Executive Mosaic extends its congratulations to Michael and the rest of the Chertoff Group organization.
