A Neustar-hosted webinar included discussions on steps communications service providers can take to strengthen their privacy policies in the age of social media, where its boundaries are subjectively and constantly being redrawn.
Gary Zimmerman, director of solution marketing at Neustar, broke down the conversation with guest litigators Jim Baldinger and Pedro Pavon of Carlton Fields into several steps to ensuring legal compliance:
- Write down the privacy policy
- Inform customers of privacy policy details and how information is being shared
- Update the privacy policy and educate clients about any changes
- Secure copies of information requests as required by law
- Regularly review and audit privacy practices
- Work with partners that hold experience in privacy policy planning and implementation
Zimmerman noted that having stronger policies is a win-win for enterprises who face heavy fines and lawsuits for non-compliance with privacy laws or loss of customer trust and loyalty.
He added that employing effective strategies give businesses a clearer framework with which to balance its obligation to protect client data and comply with government requests for personal information.
