Jacobs Selected to Support UK’s Carbon Capture Program

The U.K. Department for Energy Security and Net Zero has chosen Jacobs for technical project management support for its Carbon Capture, Usage and Storage program.

The engineering company will offer a range of other services, including strategic and change management advisory services, data solutions, and risk and quality management. In collaboration with PA Consulting, it will also offer advisory consultancy, design, and analytics services.

Jacobs will additionally provide support for the Hydrogen and Industrial Carbon Capture program.

A key part of the U.K.’s plan to achieve a net-zero economy by 2050, the CCUS program involves capturing CO2 emissions, usually from large industrial facilities, and either storing them underground or reusing them in industrial processes, such as plastic, concrete, or biofuel production.

The initial contract with DESNZ is for two years, with the possibility of being extended for two additional years. Jacobs’ selection builds on its previous experience in the field, having supported the program in a technical advisory role since 2020.

Jacob Senior Vice President Kate Kenny emphasized the importance of CCUS in achieving net-zero goals and enhancing the U.K.’s energy security. “We bring technical and strategic program management experience across CCUS projects, critical infrastructure and whole energy systems as the CCUS program drives continued development and scaling in deployment,” the executive said in a statement.

The DESNZ also announced funding for two carbon capture sites in Teesside and Merseyside in England, which are expected to create thousands of jobs and attract billions in private investment.
